My Journey through Midsomer
Travel Notes on Beauty, Nostalgia and the Art of Dying Properly
There is a county that doesn’t exist. And yet we return to it – again and again.
Midsomer is more than just the setting of a long-running crime series. It’s a landscape of longing, a world made of hedgerows, teasets and silences too neat to be innocent.
This ongoing essay collection is a personal attempt to make sense of that landscape. Each text is a travel note, tracing scenes, atmospheres, and details from Midsomer Murders – and linking them to broader themes: beauty and staging, nostalgia and order, memory and loss.
On my personal website, petra-tabarelli.com, I will start sharing essays with personal memories and thoughts in the summer, whenever I feel like it.Some entries are close readings of episodes, others wander off – into personal recollection, cultural history… But all of them belong to the same journey: A journey through Midsomer, as it appears on TV.
Alongside the essays, I’m also rewatching the entire series – slowly, and with a particular eye. Certain themes, images and peculiarities are being gathered as I go. This project will take time – most likely well into the second half of 2026 – but the current state of the collection can be followed here.
I’m keeping track of these things:
