S25E01: Treasures of Darkness
8th century: There was an Anglo-Saxon village not far from Goldsworthy that no longer exists today.
Between 1173 and 1538: An old pilgrimage route runs alongside the river from Goldsworthy to Causton Abbey. As John Becket badges were found there, the route must have been used between his canonisation in 1173 and the destruction of the shrine in Canterbury Cathedral in 1538, as the cult of St. Thomas Becket abruptly ended after that date.
17th century: A ‚wicca jar’ has been placed by the river near Goldsworthy. Although these historical wicca jars have nothing to do with the modern wicca cult, they are witch bottles that were used to ward off harm and witchcraft. Rivers were considered threshold spaces.
